Using “还是” to Express “still”

In Q1,we have learned 还是háishì,which is used in Chinese to provide options in a question. This is equivalent to one of our uses of "or" in English. (You can get a refresher here)  Today, we are going to teach you one more usage of 还是háishì.

1. When 还是háishì works with 不bù or 没méi,it can exress “still not” or “not yet”.

2. 还是háishì means still / despite the situation in an affirmative sentence: 

1) Subj+还是háishì+不bù/没méi(有yǒu)+[Verb Phrase]

Duìbùqǐ, wǒ háishì méiyǒu xiě wán bàogào, yīnwèi wǒ jīntiān de shìqíng tài duōle.

对不起,我还是没有写完报告,因为我今天的事情太多了。

I'm sorry, I still have not finished my report because I've had too much to do today.

Suīrán wǒ zài měiguó shēnghuó 5 nián le, dànshì wǒ háishì xíguàn měiguó de shíwù.

虽然我在美国生活5年了,但是我还是习惯美国的食物

I've been living in the US for 5 years now, but I'm still not used to American food.

2)(虽然suīrán)……,(但是dànshì / 可是kěshì) + Subj + 还是háishì + [Verb Phrase]

Suīrán tā de bàba māmā bù tóngyì tā qù měiguó xuéxí, dànshì tā háishì qùle.

虽然他的爸爸妈妈不同意他去美国学习,但是他还是去了

Although his parents did not approve of him going to the United States to study, he still went.

 

Jīntiān zǎoshang xià yǔle, kěshì tā háishì chūqù pǎobùle.

今天早上下雨了,可是他还是出去跑步了

It was raining this morning, but he still went out for a run.
