Explaining Why With 才

B1
Explaining Why With 才

As one of Chinese’s sexiest words,才cái has more elegant uses.  For example, it can be used with 所以suǒyǐ to explain why something happened. This phrase 所以才suǒyǐcái indicates that a particular outcome can happen only under certain conditions, or for a certain reason or purpose. The position of the subject is very flexible, it could be put at the beginning of the whole sentence, and it also could be put before 才.

Wǒ juédé kěnéng yīnwèi yǒushì, suǒyǐ cái méiyǒu lái ba!

I think he didn't come only because he might have something to do.

Wǒ juédé kěnéng yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ cái méiyǒu lái ba!

I think he didn't come only because it rained

If there are two subjects, the first one will be put at the beginning of the first clause while the second one should be put before 才cái but after 所以suǒyǐ.

Tā māmā shēngbìngle, suǒyǐ cái méiyǒu lái kāihuì.

He didn't attend meeting only because his mother was sick.
