Express “other” With 另外, 其他 or 别的

In English, the word other gets a nice large range of use cases — "the other", "an other", "other people", etc.  However, in Mando we will actually have a few different individual words for each of these cases.

Let's learn some simple rules to lock in the differences:

1) Express "the Other" With 另外lìngwài or 另lìng

 另(外) 一lìngwài yī + M. + (noun)

Suīrán zhège rén huì shuō zhōngwén, dànshì lìng (wài) yī rén bù huì.

虽然这个人会说中文,但是另(外)一不会。

Although this person can speak Chinese, the other one can't.

 一方面yīfāngmiàn....另一lìngyī方面fāngmiàn.....

Yī fāngmiàn nǐ shénme rén dōu bù rènshí, kěshì lìng yī fāngmiàn nǐ yǒu jīhuì rènshí xīn péngyǒu.

一方面你什么人都不认识,可是另一方面你有机会认识新朋友。

On the one hand you don't know anyone, but on the other hand you will have opportunity to know new friends.

2) Express "Additionally, Besides" With 另外lìngwài

Lìngwài, chúle tiānqì hé gōngzuò de wèntí, wǒ zài shànghǎi yě méiyǒu péngyǒu.

另外,除了天气和工作的问题,我在上海也没有朋友。

Besides, except the weather and job, I also don't have friend in Shanghai.

3) Express "the Other Two or Three" With 另外(的)lìngwài De or 其他(的)qítā De

另外(的) Lìngwài De/ 其他(的)qítā De + Numeral Pronoun + (Noun)

Wǒ yǒu sāntiáo qúnzi, yītiáo qúnzi shì báisè de, lìngwài (de) liǎng tiáo qúnzi shì hēisè de.

我有三条裙子,一条裙子是白色的,另外(的)两条裙子是黑色的。

I have three dresses. One dress is white and the other two dresses are black.

Zhè li yǒusān gèrén, yīgè rén shì zhōngguó rén, qítā liǎng gè shì měiguó rén.

这里有三个人,一个人是中国人,其他两个是美国人。

There are three people here. One is Chinese, the other two people are Americans.

4) Express "Others=other + Noun" With 其他(的) Qítā De or 别的biéde

别的biéde / 其他(的)qítā de + (noun)

Zhèlǐ zhǐyǒu yīgè rén shì zhōngguó rén, qítā rén dōu shì měiguó rén.

这里只有一个人是中国人,其他都是美国人。

There is only one Chinese, others are all Americans.

Chúle zhè tiáo qúnzi, bié de (qúnzi) dōu shì hēisè de.

除了这条裙子,别的(裙子)都是黑色的。

Except this dress, other dresses are all black.

Notes:

1. 其他qítā describes living things/people, and 其它qítā describes inanimate objects.

2. If we put “的de” after 其他qítā, then we can omit noun. For example

Wǒ bùxiǎng chī qítā de, wǒ zhǐ xiǎng chī miàntiáo.

我不想吃其他的,我只想吃面条。

I don't want to eat others. I only want to eat noodles.
